1 Killed, 5 Injured in DeKalb Crash
Pledger Adkinson, 26, Is Crushed to Death When Auto Strikes Bridge.
Pledger Adkinson, 26, of a Fenwick street address, was crushed to death and five other persons were hurt early Wednesday morning when their automobile struck the left railing of a bridge over South river on the Flakes Mill road, about 8 miles south of Decatur.
DeKalb County Policeman R. H. Smith and J. O. Parker reported that the car passed through Decatur about 7 o'clock and that they set out after it when complaints were received that the driver was boisterous and careless.
Mrs. Julia Spain, 34, suffered a broken right wrist, and her two daughters, Misses Johnnie Lou and Kathleen Spain, also were injured. All live at 166 Savannah street. Two other men in the car, Hubert Roden, 17, of 176 Rhinehart street, and his brother Hobart Roden, 25, of Ellenwood Ga., were not seriously injured. They were taken to Grady hospital.
Adkinson, who was driving, was pinned beneath the car. Mrs. Spain told the police that the party were driving to Ellenwood to take Hobart Roden to his home. Adkinson had been drinking, she said.
The DeKalb county policeman stated that they pursued the car when J. T. Scarbough, who operates a filling station about a mile from the scene of the accident, telephoned that a car containing six persons had almost run over his small daughter and had cursed him.
Adkinson is survived by his mother, Mrs. Millie Adkinson; three sisters, Mrs. F. B. Hay, Mrs. L. C. Self and Mrs. Fred Moon; and a brother, Reuben Adkinson. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Holiness church on Fair street. The Rev. C. W. Bramblett will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest cemetery with Harry G. Poole in charge.
