Mary "Polly" Clark, born in 1813, was a daughter of Joanna (née Dexter) and Horatio Clark, a Bennington, Vermont, silversmith and clockmaker. The births of Polly, her twin Sally, and their siblings were recorded by Bennington's town clerk.

Mary Clark of Bennington and Allen Burgess of Boonville, New York, were married on 10 March 1836 in Harwinton, Litchfield County, Connecticut. (Mary had relatives in Harwinton.) The couple's first child was born in 1838 in New Britain, Hartford County, Connecticut, but by 1840 they had moved to Geauga County, Ohio, where Allen's parents and seven younger brothers had settled in 1833. In Geauga County, Mary and her husband worked an increasingly prosperous farm, and had four more children. She died at the age of 84, and was survived by her husband and three sons.
