SHAMROCK; BURIAL OF GEORGE W. FETTER, CIVIL WAR
VETERAN
The remains of George Washington Fetter, a veteran of the Civil War, were laid at rest in the Longswamp Cemetery. The deceased was a son of Samuel Fetter and wife, Mary (nee Delp), and was born in Ruscombmanor township, on March 7, 1841. He was twice married, first to Miss Lovina Frey, with whom he had two daughters both surviving. Mrs. Frank Reitenauer of Topton and Mrs. Benjamin Angstadt of near Mertztown. He married Miss Susan Angstadt, who also survives. He served in the Civil War for a period of nine months, in the 176th Regiment, Company C and was honorably discharged. An interesting incident is related of his war experience. He, with the late Captain Keller, of Reading,
and a number of others were captured by the Confederates and when half starved, in desperation for their lives, undertook one night to dig themselves out of prison. When the escape seemed probably, Captain Keller was so weak that the rest of those who undertook the venture were going to abandon him. But, Mr. Fetter, being a man of powerful physique, a born soldier, could not forsake his friend and literally carried him for quite a distance at the risk of his own life. Both made good their escape. It is said the prosperous Mr. Keller never forgot this act of kindness and often gave substantial gifts of gratitude to the deceased who saved his life.
He died of diabetes in the Reading Hospital, aged 74 years and 5 months and 2 days. Four comrades were selected
as bearers. Samuel Reinert and John Dries, Shamrock, and Aaron Smith and Samuel Reppert, Mertztown. Feebleness and other causes prevented three of them from serving. The bearers then were David Bauer, William Schwoyer, Abraham Carl and Jonas Zwoyer.

His birth and baptism (7 Mar 1844 and 20 May 1846) along with his brother William (23 Feb 1846) agree with their ages in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses.
