Oluf C. Melgard was the son of Charl Olson Melgaard/Melgard of Norway and Beata Knudsdatter Norbo, also of Norway. Oluf was their second child and oldest son, born just a few years after they arrived in America. As a young man Oluf learned the monument business, and started a family business which lasted for generations and branched out to other Wisconsin towns. Several generations of Melgards and related families provided cemetery stones for their communities, following Olaf's vision. In 1884 he married Emilie Larson, and they were parents of 9 children.
