Mrs. Cumbee was the matriarch of a prodigious host of other loving family members, including her oldest daughter, Dale Crews and husband Jimmy who reside in Southport, NC; Johnson Gregory Cumbee and wife Pamela who also reside in Southport, NC, and Teresa Hawley and husband Dave who reside in Sanford, NC. Dale and Jimmy have three daughters who adored their grandmother: Becky Jones and husband, Kendall of Oak Island, NC; Sheila Swain and husband, Sam, of Winnabow, NC, along with their children Katelyn Alston and Layton. Dale and Jimmy's youngest daughter Tanya Beecher and husband Frank live in Wilmington, NC with their children Emily and Kirra. Greg and Pamela have three children: Greg Cumbee, Jr. and his wife Rebekah along with their children, Jael, Deborah, Josiah, Naomi, and Ben of Durham, NC; Alison Anderson and her children reside in Leland, NC; she has four beautiful children: Hailey, Micah, Ella, and Braelyn. Joshua Nicholas Cumbee and his wife Tara Hilthon Cumbee reside in Boiling Spring Lakes with their two delightful daughters, Hannah and Phoebe. The youngest daughter, Teresa Hawley and her husband Dave reside in Sanford, NC; their two daughters are Meredith and Morgan Brigman. Morgan's husband is Bobby; they have a beautiful son, Jaxx. Additionally, Mrs. Cumbee has a surviving brother, Franklin D. Cox of Southport, NC, and sister, Katie Price, of Dover, Delaware.
Mrs. Cumbee spent her life in service to her Lord and family. She was a gifted pianist, vocalist, and organist. She played the piano and organ for decades in various churches to share her profound love of her Lord and her passion for music. She gave selflessly to others and always encouraged her grandchildren to smile at others; her secret was that it would make them smile back, thus helping them to have a joyful perspective about life. Before the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's Disease, her kitchen was always filled with mesmerizing smells of pound cakes, collard greens, corn dumplings, baked macaroni and cheese, "good stuff," chocolate layered stack cakes, fresh coffee, and good conversation. The porch was always a place for friends to congregate to talk about everything and nothing, which transformed strangers into friends.
It is indescribable how very much this amazing woman will be missed by her loving family and loved ones. She has, indeed, touched all of our lives, which has helped to transform us into better people.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday, December 24, 2010 in Southport Baptist Church Chapel with Reverend Jason Bland and Reverend Anthony Clemmons officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
