Mrs. Dorothy Cox Watkins, age 76, a resident of Rex Nursing Care Center of Apex, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2003, at Western Wake Hospital, Cary, NC.
She was born in Wilmington, NC, on February 13, 1927, the daughter of the late Marcellus and Katie Piver Cox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Harold T. Watkins.
Mrs. Watkins was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a teacher at New Hanover High School for many years, until her retirement. Dorothy was a graduate of U.N.C.W. with a BA degree and a graduate of E.C.U. with a MA degree and a certificate of Advanced Study in English. She was a member or Delta Kappa Gamma Int. Society and of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
Surviving are her two sons, Daniel Baxter Watkins and wife Doris of Miami, FL., and Stephen Grant Watkins and wife Laura of Cary, NC; two grandsons, Ryan Watkins and Matthew Watkins, both of Cary, NC; two brothers, Joseph Cox of Readville, MA, and Frank Cox of Southport, NC; two sisters, Katie Price of Dover, DE, and Frances Cumbee of Southport; numerous nieces and nephew also survive.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday December 1, 2003, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Norman Wheeler and Rev. Fitzhugh Fennell officiating. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Hugh Cox, Gregory Cumbee, Morry Watkins, Don Watkins, David Harrell and Walter Hinson
