Dessie was a very talented artist, a gift she passed on to her children. Her sense of humor was outstanding and she always kept her family and friends laughing. In 1970 Dessie's eyesight began to fail and by 1975 she was blind.
R.N., as everyone called him, passed away in 1988. In 1989 Dessie asked her daughter to write down a poem that she had composed in her mind. This poem was read at her funeral in 1990. Poem as follows:
MY HUSBAND
You said you'd always love me darling,
as you did that moonlight night,
As we sat in the old Ford on the hill.
There we said we would love
each other evermore.
We both grew old together
Yet,the stars are shining still.
But now you've gone and left me.
My days are long and lonely.
My nights are lonely too.
You are gone but not forgotten.
I'll always think of you.
Sixty-three long years we were married.
We shared our sorrows and our joys.
Raised a family of five children,
two girls and three boys.
One by one they grew up and left us
and now we are all alone.
Each day I love you more,
than I did when we first began.
But now you're gone forever-
my hurt it goes so deep.
I'll never see you on earth again,
but for you I cannot weep.
For someday I'll lie beside you-
in a deep and peaceful sleep.
