Richard P. "Birdie" Conant, 51, of 22 Walnut St., died Wednesday at Franklin Medical Center. He was a 20-year industrial engineer and plant manager for Lamson & Goodnow Manufacturing Co. and retired in 1996. Born in this town, he graduated from Greenfield High School in 1967 and received a bachelor's degree in engineering from the University of Massachusetts in 1972. He was a lifelong resident, a member of the Country Club and the Greenfield Men's Hockey League and a coach for the Franklin County Hockey Association and the Greenfield Minor League. He leaves his wife, the former Nancy A. Frost; three sons, Samuel, Henry and William, all at home; his parents, Chester and Eleanor (Robichaud) Conant; five brothers, James, William and Charles, all of Greenfield, Chester of Amesbury, and Robert of Reading; and a sister, Mary McManus of Hopkinton. The funeral will be Friday afternoon at St. James Episcopal Church, with burial at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are this evening at Kostanski Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Conant Education Fund, in care of Fern Kolakoski, Fleet Bank, 208 Federal St., Greenfield, MA 01301; the Country Club Junior Golf Program, in care of Bucky O'Brien, 326C Davis St., Greenfield, MA 01301, or the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
