'History of Montana, 1739-1885,' pub. 1885, by Michael A. Leeson, Chapter XXXVI, Gallatin County, page 1096:

"Jarvis Akin, Bozeman, is of New England birth, as were his ancestors for several generations. His father was of English origin. Three Akin brothers came to America long ere the Revolution; two of them served in the war, his great grandfather having been one of the two. Jarvis' father was a shoe manufacturer in Conn. In the autumn of 1852 Mr. Akin moved to Wisconsin, five miles west of Racine, and engaged in farming until April, 1864, when he determined to cross the plains to Montana. Carrying out his purpose, he arrived in Virginia City the same summer, and from here went to Gallatin City, where he engaged in farming for two years, then returned to the East and spent one year, and again, in 1867, crossed the plains via the northern route to Fort Benton, thence to Helena and on to Gallatin City where he located upon a farm again. In February 1869, he moved into his hotel at Gallatin City, the first regular hotel in the place. As soon as the land was surveyed Mr. Akin had a town site platted, and recorded under the name Gallatin City, where he kept a hotel until 1880. He then came to Bozeman and purchased his present home. Mr. Akin was married in 1858, and by this union there were three children... Mr. Akin lost his wife, and was, after some time, married to Miss Alethe Fuller, a native of Brighton, Livingston Co., Mich. Mr. Akin has a beautiful home near Bozeman. His farm is provided with all buildings necessary for the care of stock, grain and farming utensils."
