Wilbert Schmick passed away in his sleep, December 15, 2010, at his home in Sandy, UT. Wilbert was born in St. Maries, ID on August 21, 1925. Wilbert was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna Marie Schmick (Goerlitz); wife, Betty Jean Schmick (Jennings); daughter, Barbara Jean Kersis; brothers Dan, George and Henry Schmick; sister, Amelia "Mil" Harrison and an infant sister. He is survived by a brother Eugene Schmick of Salem, OR; his son Jerome "Jerry" E. Schmick, Sr. (Gloria Jeanne Hand) of Pleasant View, UT; five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Wilbert served his country in World War II, Korea and Vietnam (twice). He was wounded on his 2nd tour of duty in Vietnam. After retirement in 1971 he worked in several industries but his most loved job was working for Smith's for 10 years. He really enjoyed working with all the staff at Smiths, 2039 E. 9400 S. in Sandy, UT. Wil was also a volunteer at Alta View Hospital Acute Care for seven years accumulating over 1480 hours of service to the hospital and its patients. That service only ended in October of this year. He was an active member of the Sandy Senior Center serving in several capacities over the years. He was also an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sandy, UT for over 30 years and served in many callings. He also enjoyed golf, as both a league member and individual, from the time the snow melted until it snowed again and only stopped this year. When it started snowing he was a bowler and participated in leagues and individually. Wil loved and served his God, his country, community and family. He always had a ready smile and willingness to serve. The family would like to thank Applegate Hospice for their assistance with Wil. Viewing will be at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. 10600 S. in Sandy, UT. Sunday, December 19, 2010 from 6-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salt Lake Rescue Mission or a charity of choice. Funeral Services will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 8575 S. 700 E., in Sandy, UT at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 20, 2010 with a viewing at the church from 9:00 to 9:50 a.m. Interment will follow at Larkin Sunset Gardens.
