Mrs. Mary Ann Paul, 88, Dies Suddenly of Heart Disease at Her Home


Carthage, Mo., July 23.—Mrs. Mary Ann Paul, 88 years old, resident of Jasper county for sixty-one years, died suddenly at 11:30 o'clock this morning at the home of her son, William Paul, two and a half miles west of Carthage on the concrete road. Death followed a sudden heart attack.

Mrs. Paul moved with her parents when only nine years old to Nodaway county, Missouri, from Indiana, where she was born June 7, 1839. In 1864, she was married to R. K. Paul and moved to Jasper county two years later. Her husband died in 1897. Five of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul survives.

In Church Work.

Mrs. Paul for many years was engaged in work of the First Baptist church, of which she was a member. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. W. P. Gresham of northwest of Carthage; Mrs. R. E. Anderson of Modesto, Ill., Mrs. B. V. Benschoter of Lanagan, Mo., and Mrs. W. E. Gaiter of Baxter Springs, Kan., a son W. L. Paul of Carthage; two brothers, S. L. Mohler of Manhattan, Kan,, and A. G. Mohler of Sulphur Springs, Ark., and a sister, Mrs. T. Brltton of Los Animas, Colo. Eighteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Perry Gresham, six and a half miles northwest of Carthage, where the body was removed today. Burial will be in Stone cemetery nine and a half miles north of Carthage.

FINAL RITES ARE HELD FOR MRS. MARY ANN PAUL
Carthage, Mo., July 25

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Paul, who died suddenly Saturday morning at her home west of Carthage, were held at 11 o'clock this morning at the Perry Grisham home, six miles northwest of Carthage, with the Rev. F. C. Medearis, in charge.

Mrs. Burt Evans, Mrs. G. L. Benschoter, Mrs. Verma[?] Greninger, Miss Lottie Evans and George Benschoter sang. Pallbearers, all grandsons of Mrs. Paul, were Roscoe Gaither, Ed Benschoter, John Sheets, Ward Sours, Ed Marshall, and Melvin Benschoter.

Burial was in Stone cemetery, nine and one half miles north of Carthage, near the ? county line.

Mary Ann's parents were William A and Clory A (Stingley) Moler. In the 1850 census, the family is living in Nodaway County, Missouri. The children in the household are recorded as:

In the 1863 Civil War draft registration, Rayburn K Paul was listed as a single farmer, a non-resident, in Nodaway County. He would not stay single for long.

Mary Ann Moler married Rayburn K Paul on February 11, 1864, in Nodaway County. The year after they married the couple moved to Scott, in Linn County, Kansas, but did not stay there. They were back in Missouri, Jasper County, by 1866 when their first child was born, Clora Belle, 1866 – 1940.

Mary Ann and William had four more children:

Mary Ann remained in Jasper County, near Carthage, until her death in 1927. Her death certificate gave her cause of death as heart failure, secondary was senility. Her certificate was informed by her daughter Ora.

Her Missouri Death Certificate showed her birth year as 1839 and the stone is dated 1840.
She was the daughter of William M Moler and Clora Ann Stingley.
Buried in Stone Cemetery under the direction of Ulmer-Drake Funeral home in Carthage, MO.
