Polycarpus Nelson, (July 21, 1680-Dec.19, 1738), Flatbush, King's Co or Mamaroneck, Westchester Co, NY- d. Mamaroneck, Westchester Co, NY, m. 1st. Gloriana Ogden (bet. 1680-1700- ), 2nd. Tradition has that when Polycarpus' father, John Nelson, emigrated from England, the ship in which he embarqued, was driven by stress of bad weather upon the coast of France. Fortunately, the kindess of people living along the coast meant that the passengers were sheltered in homes along the French coast and in the smaller towns until the ship was repaired and safe to proceed. John Nelson was given a shelter by the family of a French Physician, named Polycarpus. John stayed until the ship was ready to sail. Polycarpus refused to take any reimbursement for for his kindness, but he made one request of John Nelson. That when he was married and settled in his American home, that John should name his first-born son, Polycarpus.
