The son of Robert May, Jr. and Ann Rowe, he immigrated from England at the age of 3. He was the lifelong husband of Margaret Zimmerman. When at 20 he married Margaret on June 8, 1958 in Geneseo, Henry, Illinois. In his 30's he moved from Pennsylvania to Greene County, Iowa where he remained the rest of his life. He owned his home free and clear, receiving income as a landlord. Of three children one, Sarah Eleanor born in Illinois, survived to marry and give them grandchildren.
