Retired Marine Col. William C[ullen] CAPEHART, 75 died Friday.
Born in Bertie County, N.C., he was a son of the late William Rhodes and Deas Manning BOYYKIN Capehart. A graduate of the University of South Carolina, he attended the Air War College and George Washington University.

During WW2, he was a member of the First Marine Division and participated in the invasion of Guadalcanal, winning a Purple Heart during the campaign. Shortly before the end of World War II, he led an expedition that secured the island of Agrihan in the Northern Marianas, the last island secured before the armistice. He also served in the Tinian, Okinawa and Ryuskus campaigns.
Among his awards were the Bronze Star with Combat “V”, Presidential Unit Citation and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre medal with four battle stars.

Post-war assignments include command of the 12 Marine Regiment of the Third Division in Japan and division inspector and assistant Third Division Chief of Staff in Okinawa. He also served as director of corrective services for the Bureau of Naval Personnel and became assistant chief of naval personnel. He was provost marshal at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and retired as commanding officer of the Marine Barracks in the U.S. Naval Base after 30 years.

He was active in civic activities in Boykin as a member of the American Legion, the 1st Marine Division Association, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Military Order of the Stars and Bars, Sons of the American Revolution, S.C. Society, Kershaw County Historical Society, Museum of the Confederacy, Fine Arts Center of Kershaw, Friends of the Kershaw County Library and Riverbanks Zoological Society and chairman of the Bicentennial Commission for Kershaw County. He was a member of the SAE Fraternity, S.C. Delta Chapter.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Barr Capehart; daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Buchanan of Maidens, VA, Mrs. Catherine Pope of Roswell, GA, and Mrs. Clara Baker of Ruxton, MD; a son, William Capehart III of Charleston; and a brother. Burwell Capehart of Wilson, N.C.
Services will be held at 11.a.m. Monday at Church of the Ascension in Hagood. Burial, with full military rites, will be in Quaker Cemetery of Camden.”
