Vivian Pearl Ballard Cook, 96, died peacefully at her home in Homestead, Fla., on Monday, December 6, 2010.

Born in Jeffery, W.Va., to Lillie Hager Ballard and Julian E. Ballard Sr., she and her family moved to Florida in 1955.

Her families were pioneer settlers in Boone County. Affectionately, known as "Momma" Cook, she was a devoted member of the Methodist Church in both West Virginia and Florida.

She delighted in music, travel and the arts, having the opportunity to enjoy the world and experience the diversity and love of peoples throughout the world. She is mourned today by Christian, Muslim, and Hindu friends, as she lived with her daughter, Ambassador Frances Cook, for short periods, in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Nash Cook, a well-known public school teacher and principal, both in Boone County and in Florida. Her sole remaining sibling, Julian E. Ballard, 89, resides in Belle, W.V.

The funeral will be held in Homestead, Fla., on Monday, December 13. Ambassador Cook and members of the family will accompany the body to West Virginia. A viewing will held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, at Handley Funeral Home, located at 300 Riverside Drive in Madison, followed immediately by a graveside service and burial in Boone Memorial Park, where she will be laid to her final rest at 1 p.m. beside her husband, Nash
