"Frederick Trooper Meets Death Cleaning Pistol: Sispicion [sic] of Foul Play Dispelled With Official Word From Captain of Command.
"All speculation as to the manner in which Trooper Roscoe Brandenburg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Brandenburg, near Harmony, Frederick county, met his death at Camp Vadooe, 'somewhere in Mexico' was stopped Friday when the parents received a communication from Captain Barton, Troop L, United States cavalry service, to the effect that the youth accidentally shot himself while cleaning a service revolver on November 16.
"The commander of the troop, in his letter, said that the bullet entered the chest, penetrating to the heart, causing almost instand death. He said that just a few minutes before the accident, young Brandenburg had been talking with his companions. He left the group, with the explanation that 'it would soon be time for inspection, and that he had to clean his revolver.' A few minutes later the report of the revolver shot was heard. His comrades investigated and found Brandenburg lying on his cot. The company's physician was summoned but the youth had died within a few moments after the shot had been heard."
