The daughter of the late Julius and Martha Lambert. Ruth was the youngest of sixteen children. Born in Loudon County, Va., Ruth received her formal education in the public schools of Virginia. She later became a resident of Washington, D. C. and a member of St. Phillips Baptist Church. Ruth was active in her neighborhood, always willing to serve those who were in need.

Ruth took care of the elderly in her community. Not only did she provide food and housekeeping to the shut-in, she also provided them with her companionship. Her community service continued until her health began to fail.

Ruth valued education highly and saw to it that her children became proficient in learning. As each child entered school they also entered music school. Collectively, her children played the piano, violin, cello, bass violin, and trumpet.

She was married to Mosely Clayborn Gaines, Sr. From this marriage were four (4) children: Matthew D., Dr. Lelia T., and Mosely C. Gaines Jr.; and Marlene G. Stringfellow.
