Native Virginia men in the area which was to become Clifton - some young, some not so young - joined up to fight for the Southern cause. Most of their family names went back one hundred. years or more in the area. Some signed up as "Mosby's Rangers," some went with other units. Among them were Captain James C. Kincheloe, Sgt. William S. Kincheloe, R. S. Kincheloe, Isaac Fairfax, L. W. Fairfax, Thomas Fairfax, Cornelius Beach, Thomas Beach, Addison Davis, Henry E. Davis, J. B. Davis, Newton J. Dulany, John F. Mayhugh, Zachariah Mayhugh, James Milligan, George Pettit, James H. Pettit, Thomas Simpson, James E. Stone, George W. Tillet, Henry T. Tillet, John R. Tillet, George W. Wilt, Lewis Woodyard, John M. Ford, Thomas F. Adams, Joseph Crouch, and John D. Elzey. 3Sgt. William Simpson Kinchelce was born on the family plantation, More Hill, in Fairfax County, near Bull Run.
