John du Pont, who killed an Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler David Schultz at his estate near Philadelphia, died Thursday after being found unresponsive in his prison cell. Du Pont was found just before 7 a.m. at a Pennsylvania state prison near Somerset, prisons spokeswoman Susan McNaughton said. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital. He was the great-great-grandson of chemical company founder E. I. du Pont and son of William du Pont, Jr. and Jean Liseter Austin.

Age 72, of Somerset, PA, formerly of Newtown Square, PA, died on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Somerset Hospital in Somerset, PA. Mr. du Pont was a 1957 graduate of The Haverford School; he attended the University of Pennsylvania, and graduated from the University of Miami, with a BS in Marine Biology in 1965. He continued his education, earning a PhD in Natural Science, in 1971 from Villanova University. Mr. du Pont was the founder of the Delaware Museum of Natural History, as well as the founder of Foxcatcher Swimming and Foxcatcher Wrestling. He was a well known ornithologist, philatelist, and a philanthropist. His memberships include the U.S. Modern Pentathlon Association, the American Ornithologists Union, as well as the British Ornithologists Union. John is survived by his sister Jean Ellen DuPont Shelhan, of Coral Gables, FL, and his step-brother, William du Pont II, of Orlando, FL. Services will be held privately at the du Pont Family Cemetery. Chandler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He grew up at Liseter Hall, a mansion built in 1922 in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. The mansion was built by his maternal grandfather.

Du Pont graduated from Haverford School in 1957. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he belonged to the Zeta Psi fraternity, but withdrew before completing his freshman year.

On September 3, 1983, du Pont married 29-year-old Gale Wenk. Du Pont filed for divorce when they had been married for ten months. The divorce became final in 1987.

On January 26, 1996, du Pont shot and killed Dave Schultz in the driveway of Schultz's home.
