Jean Ellen du Pont Shehan

Age 88, died peacefully on August 1, 2011 in her apartment at the Methodist Country House, Greenville, Delaware.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, J. H. Tyler McConnell of Wilmington, DE and William Mason Shehan Jr. of Talbot County, MD, and also her son, William McConnell, her sister, Evelyn, her brothers, Henry and John and survived by a half-brother, Bill.

She was born February 23, 1923 in Newtown Square, PA to the late William DuPont Jr. and Jean Liseter Austin. Jean was an accomplished equestrian, Master of Foxhounds and business woman. Through her financial contributions and her service on numerous Boards of Directors, she supported many charities - nationally and locally.

She is survived by her two daughters, Marion Lassen, and her husband, Kai, and Susan McConnell and a son, James McConnell, and his wife, Mary. In addition, she is survived by four grandchildren, Stephanie Keen, and her husband, Kevin, Caroline Rinehart, William Lassen, and Tyler Lassen and by two great-grandchildren, Lyndsey and Brandon Keen. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Sandy Priebe, Gale Shehan, Pat Shehan, Mason Shehan III and his wife, Kathy, and Robin Shehan.

The family would like to thank Urbano Quispe and Mildred Jones for their years of loving care.

A private graveside internment was held on August 4 at the du Pont Family Cemetery, Greenville, Delaware.

A public celebration of Jean's life will be held August 31, from 4 to 7 pm at the Jean Ellen du Pont Shehan Visitor Center, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, 10901 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables, FL 33156.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jean's memory to your local chapter of the American Red Cross or to the DelawareHospice.org.
