Bernard II Von Sachseny, Duke of Saxony

Bernard was the son of Bernard I and Hildegard von Stade, and the grandson of Duke Herman and Oda, Henry von Stade and Hildegarde von Rheinhausen. He was from the Billung dynasty, born about 995, and had all the rights of a count in Frisia.

Bernard was the husband of Eilika or Elica of Schweinfurt, the daughter of Henry of Schweinfurt. They had the following children:
* Gertrude of Saxony, wife of Floris I, Count of Holland & Robert I, Count of Flanders
* Ordulf, married the daughter of the King of Norway
* Hermann
* Ida of Saxony, wife of Albert III, Count of Namur.

Bernard would be regarded as the greatest of the Billung line, implementing tribal laws after his father had not been able to. Bernard expanded his powers and territory to include the Slavs. n 1045, he erected the Alsterburg castle in Hamburg.
When he died his son, Ordulf, became the next Duke, and married the daughter of Olaf of Norway and Astrid of Sweden. Bernard was buried in the Church of Saint Michael in Lüneburg.
