Abiel Linsley III was born 26 Dec 1757 at Litchfield, Litchfield, CT son of Abiel Jr and Thankful Pond (1733-1777). He married 28 Sep 1783 at Woodbury, Litchfield, CT reported to have been performed by Daniel Sherman, Town clerk, to Anna Gilbert, born 26 Apr 1763 Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, daughter of Isiah Gilbert (1733-1825) and Esther Bull (1732-1774) Anna died between 1846 and 1850 at Prattsburg. Anna is reportedly buried here in Prattsburgh Pioneer but we have found no marker.

Abiel Linsley enlisted "for the duration" on 5 May 1777 in the Connecticut 1st and was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant to the Conn 8th on Apr 1780 and served until Mar 1783 when he is reported as deserted. His family applied for pensioned and challenged the decision from his death until Ann Gilbert Linsley's death. The family contended the war ended in 1783 and he was discharged, but the records required for for proof were burned in a fire.

Abiel Linsley was among the first settlers of Cornwall, Vermont. His name is among those inscribed on the back of the original charter for the settlement of the area. Although he was among those who left the area in 1777, after the conclusion of the Revolutionary War in 1783, he returned to his original stake, or 'pitch.' Abiel and his family shared the spacious dwelling of his brother Joel, and for many years the two families lived side-by-side.

Abiel and his family moved to Augusta in Oneida County, New York, in 1794. This may have been the result of land disputes which were rife in the area after the war. The original surveys and records had been destroyed by a 1778 fire in Connecticut where they had been placed for safe-keeping.

Abiel, Anna, and her father were among the first nine members of the Congregational Church at Augusta when it was established on September 7, 1797, "In 1797 a Congregational Church was formed with nine members, whose names were Isaiah Gilbert, Experience Gilbert, Benjamin Durkee, Susanna Durkee, Thomas Stafford, Lucy Stafford, Ezra Saxton, Abiel Linsley and Anna Linsley. After the formation of the society, they held services on the Sabbath in school houses, barns, private-dwellings, and sometimes in the open air." Abiel was appointed moderator (Deacon). He and his father-in-law presided at meetings for six or seven years, at which time Abiel left the area for Steuben County, New York.

He was instrumental in the formation in the Genesee Missionary Society, "The Genesee Missionary Society had its origin during January of the year 1810, at where now Phelps village is located. The first suggestions were received from Deacon Abiel LINDSLEY, of Prattsburg, to Rev. James N. HOTCHKIN, at the semi-annual meeting of the Ontario association, relative to raising funds for the distribution of Bibles and tracts to the destitute. A society was formed, a constitution adopted, and officers were elected. Rev. CHAPMAN, of the Geneva presbytery, was elected president of the society, which was, later, legally incorporated."
