Abiel and his family moved to Augusta in Oneida County, New York, in 1794 with his father in law Isiah Gilbert, his second wife Experience Wright (widow of Philip Pond), their son Elias Gilbert(and his eventual in-laws, the Durkee family, who came from Woodbury, CT).
Abiel, Ann, and her father were among the first nine members of the Congregational Church at Augusta when it was established on September 7, 1797, "In 1797 a Congregational Church was formed with nine members, whose names were Isaiah Gilbert, Experience Gilbert, Benjamin Durkee, Susanna Durkee, Thomas Stafford, Lucy Stafford, Ezra Saxton, Abiel Linsley and Anna Linsley. After the formation of the society, they held services on the Sabbath in school houses, barns, private-dwellings, and sometimes in the open air." Abiel was appointed moderator (Deacon). He and his father-in-law presided at meetings for six or seven years, at which time Abiel left the area for Steuben County, New York.His father in law, Isaiah Gilbert went back to Vermont where he resided with his two other daughters, Levina, wife of Joel Linlsey and Sally, wife of Luther Tilden.
