Geraldine "Gerri" Baskett Defenderfer, 77, died Sunday, December 5th at Millers Merry Manor, Marion, where she lived and struggled with Alzheimer's for the last five years.

Gerri started working for Marion City Schools, back in the mid 1960's, when it was independently owned. She was the first female school bus driver and retired after approximately 35 years of service. She started as a bus driver, moved up to assistant manager, and then became the Director of Transportation for Marion Community Schools. She attended Roseburg Church of God.

Gerri was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Lee Roy Baskett Jr. and her second husband, Alan Defenderfer. Also preceding her in death were three sons, David Lee Baskett, Gilbert Wayne Basket, (Find A Grave Memorial# 10128136) and Douglas Arthur Baskett, (Find A Grave Memorial# 19655350); sisters, Mary Bailey and Barbara Joan Moore; and one grandchild, Jeremy Lee Baskett, who died June 19, 2010 (Find A Grave Memorial# 54027795).

Gerri is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Baskett) Ritchey, Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Deborah Baskett, Florida; sisters, Juanita Noller, North Ft. Myers, Fla., Dollie Eldridge, Marion, Roberta (Dan) Crouch, Marion, Viola Swarts, Marion, Ruth Ann (Roy) Fultz, Marion; brother, Harry (Janet) Bailey, Hartford City; several nieces and nephews; and several surviving grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Avenue, Marion, IN, with Pastor Paul Tomlinson officiating.

Burial is in Grant Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 4-8 PM at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Salvation Army, 359 N. Bradner Avenue, Marion, IN.
