A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster January 16, 1864, as a private with Independent Battery I Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He was discharged per special order May 30, 1865, at Washington DC, presumably by surgeon's certificate because he successfully applied for a disability pension the following August.
By 1870, he was living with his family in Miami County, Indiana, where he died in Wawpecong.
