Emmett Lee Wingfield, 82, of 3327 Murray St. died Tuesday.

Born in Richland County, he was a son of the late Emmett Lee and Elizabeth McCreery Wingfield. He was a 1927 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in civil engineering. He was captain of the football team and a member of SAE fraternity.

He worked with Murray and Flood Engineers on the cons of the Saluda Dam and the Long Island Railroad in New York. He was the former owner of Wingfield Insurance Agency and was employed with DuBose Stuckey Insurance Co. when Wingfield Insurance Agency merged with it. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Kiwanis Club, the Cotillion Club and Forest Lake County Club.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Louisa Shand Wingfield; a son, Emmett Lee Wingfield of West Columbia; a brother, William Wingfield of Columbia; and grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. today at Elmwood Cemetery, conducted by the Very Rev. John E. Banks, Jr.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, is in charge.
