Charles (Lowell) Gunderson was drafted into the U.S. Navy in February 1943 and was sent to the following training schools: Naval Training School (diesel), Hemphill Institute of Technology, Los Angeles, California; Fleet Service Schools (Internal Conbustion-Ldg. Craft) in San Diego California; Landing Craft School, Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet. Lowell was assigned to the USS Farenholt, a lightweight destroyer and served in major engagements in the southwest Pacific. The Farenholt, leading five ships, was the first to enter Rabaul Harbor on the New Britain Island which they shelled and torpedoed. Decorations from these campaigns include the Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon with 3 bronze stars representing action at Rabaul, Kavieng and Empress Augusta Bay. In addition to the Solomon Island campaigns, he served in the Aleutian Island engagement as well.
