Marie was born in the small German town of Ankum to Johann Heinrich Friedrich Von Bokern and Maria Elisabetha Margaretha Homer. Due to Imperial German laws forbidding a single son to leave Germany, Friedrich's father was unable to immigrate to the United States as his five younger half-sisters had. However, most of his children would do so and Mary immigrated to the U.S. in 1895. She settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where her siblings who had previously immigrated lived. On 25 Jan 1910 Maria married Adolph Nopper and they had ten children: Alma, Leo, Geneva, Sylvester, Norbert, Clarence, Marie, Agnella, Mary Agnes and Adolph. Maria died at the age of 95
