After his discharge in September 1865 he went back home and and is listed in his fathers household in the 1870 census. We do not know when he came west but by 1874 he was in Virginia City, NV working for the Virginia & Truckee RR where he worked with a single break until 1893. He was out of work until 1897 when he found work with the Southern Pacific RR in California. He was run over and killed by a locomotoive in the west Oakland yards on January 27, 1898. He was also a memember of the Local GAR Post and the Nevada National Guard and was buried with full military honors in the Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City NV.
The photo of the young George was taken just after he enlisted in 1865 and is courtesy of the Heritage family in CC The photo of his grave was taken in Sept. 2001
We do not know who installed the headstones on these graves but because they are all the same it appears to have been done at the same time and birth and death dates for george are incorrect.
