Michigan Governor. He attended Temple Hill Academy, moved to Flint, Michigan in 1836 and was a teacher. He also worked as a farmer, plus engaged in the lumber and banking industries. He was a member of the Flint City Council, treasurer of Genesee County, (1856-64), a member of the Michigan State Senate, (1870-71) and a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, (1873-75). In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to be the 19th Governor of Michigan, serving until 1885. While he was in office, the establishment of the state bureau of labor statistics was approved. After his term, he resumed his former business activities until his death at age 81.
