Civil War Veteran, conscripted into Confederacy C Company 60th Mounted Infantry Dec 1862. Shade joined Union Army 1st TN Cavalry K Mar 17, 1863, same as brother Mitch McLain.

Injured in Battle of Chickamauga, GA, horse threw him, treated by Dr. Rankin in Chattanooga field hospital. Crippled left knee & hip, & could not do carpentry as he could before the war.
He was mustered out in Nashville as a Corporal 19 Sept 1863.
Honorably discharged from Union Army June 19, 1865.

Shade & 1st wife Elmira Gardner had son Isaac Mitchell & daughter "Betts" Anna Elizabeth. Divorced Oct 1865.

He & 2nd wife Virinda Myers had 5 sons & 7 daughters born from 1867 to 1892. They lived in Greene County, TN, then Upper Beech Creek & Van Hill in Hawkins County, TN.

Shadrack was named after his Great-Grandfather Shadrack Duff (1746 Ireland -1781 NC) who was father of his paternal Grandmother Elizabeth Duff McLain (1773-1860.) Shadrick Duff was killed in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Guilford County Courthouse in NC, against Cornwallis.
