Born in West Newton, Pennsylvania, the sixth child of the late Dennis and the late Lucy (Barnes) Echols, at an early age her family migrated to Loachapoka, Alabama, where she attended local schools and graduated from high school.
She became a member of Ebenezer C.M.E. Church and remained a life-long Christian, Eastern Star, White Rose Court, and Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served on the Usher Board for over fifty years, Home Missionary, and other functions of the church, and was also involved in the community as a youth teen city director, cooking for seniors, and a member of the neighborhood board.
Lucy was an avid bowler, enjoyed gardening, loved traveling, and liked attending family reunions that she never missed.
She is survived by four children, Theda (Crowder) Coleman of New Britain, Verg Crowder Jr. of Plainville, Anthony B. Crowder of New Britain, and Dennis L. Crowder of Litchfield, three grandchildren, Kim-Yua, Dominique, and Darren Crowder, two great-grandchildren, Jaliyah and Jordan Crowder, four sisters-in-law, Pearlie Echols, Doris Echols, Lizzie Pearl Echols, and Ann Echols, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Verdis Mae Crowder, five brothers, Baltimore Lyrd Echols, Dennis Echols Jr., James Echols, Leo Echols, and Horace Echols, a sister, Carlater Shannon, a sister-in-law, Leola Echols, and a brother-in-law, Herschel Shannon.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 12:00 p.m. in Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church, 25 Crestwood Lane, New Britain.
Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, New Britain.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Church on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the services.
