She was the first born child of George Giles (Wield, Hampshire, England 1830-1897) and his second wife Elizabeth Thorn (Preston Candover, Hampshire, England 1841-1932). They arrived with his 5 children from his first marriage, aboard the Constitution, which sailed from Liverpool June 24, 1868, and arrived in New York August 15. They settled in Springville, where Georges brother William lived with his family (Williams second child Lucy was John Packs 7th wife). They had 12 children, Julia being born to them on the February 6, 1869, although not all survived.
She is believed to have married Peter Maroni Peay on January 4, 1887. He died in 1890 leaving Julia with two young children, Austin and Arnold. By 1910, Julia had married Danial Raynor.
