Robert Reed Schellenger was the only surviving child of the marriage of Aaron and Anna Stevens Schellinger of Bridgeton, Cumberland, New Jersey. His mother, Anna, died on 8 December 1875 as result of childbirth in early November 1875. Robert Reed attend Princeton University during the period 1893-1897; his degree was in Civil Engineering. Following graduation he found employment in Wise Co, Virginia in the coal mining industry, eventually rising to the position of Chief Electrical Engineer. Robert Reed married Mary Ann Bailey, daughter of Alec and Elizabeth Bailey of Wake Co, North Carolina, on 25 May 1897, in Charlotte, North Carolina. During their marriage, Robert Reed and Mary Ann raised three children: Aileen C Donnelly (1902-1986), Helen F "Nellie" Moore (1906-1977) and Robert Forrest (1913-1968); Mamie and her children resided in Cincinnati, Ohio, for a number of years prior to her death. Robert Reed continued to work in the coal mining industry throughout his life in Kentucky, West Virginia and Ohio, until his death on 8 July 1939 in Paintsville, Kentucky. His wife preceded him in death and they are buried together in Laurel IOOF Cemetery.
