Thomas William Hinshaw was the son of William A. Hinshaw and Martha Elizabeth Langston. He married Vina Arvella Counts, daughter of Andrew Jackson Counts and Elizabeth Jane Hardin, on September 4, 1871, in Jackson County, Alabama.

To this union was born eight children - William Jackson, Betty, Mary Ann (Dodson), Ira Emmett, John Yeargin, Louie Leona (Money), James Thomas, and Nancy Myrtle (Fanning).

The family lived in a small cabin on property that adjoined the Beech Grove United Methodist Church and Cemetery. The cabin is still standing and in good condition as of 2012.

While hauling lumber in nearby Huntland, Tennessee, a thunderstorm came up, causing Tom and Albert Hinshaw to seek shelter in a barn. Tom was struck by lightening and killed while standing in the open doorway of the barn.
