Charles B. "Charlie" Cliett Sr., 86, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at North Mississippi Medical Center, West Point.

He was born July 10, 1924, in Montpelier, Miss., to Sally Lou Saul Cliett and James T. Cliett.

He was department head and professor of the Aerospace Engineering Department at Mississippi State University from 1960 to 1991, where he had worked since 1947. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a veteran of the Navy, serving as a lieutenant junior grade during World War II.

He married Grace Campbell on Dec. 25, 1946, in West Point.

He received an honorary doctorate degree from MSU in 2003. In the resolution awarding his honorary degree, the Mississippi Board of Trustees stated that "Mr. Cliett's determination, hard work, insight and ability to bring out the best in his colleagues and students have brought immense recognition to the engineering research and teaching program of Mississippi State University."

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, from First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Shannon officiating. Also speaking will be Bob Wyman and Billie J. Ball. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Campbell Cliett of West Point; one son, Charles B. Cliett Jr. of Little Rock, Ark.; a sister, Sarah Ann Fletcher of Indianola.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Susan Marie Cliett in 2008; and his brother, Russell Cliett.

Pallbearers will be Bob Wyman, John Wyman, Carlisle Campbell, George Hinnant, Edward Hinnant, Bob Marshall, Art Shirley and Wade Roberts.
