Philip Mecom Funeral to be Thursday
A prominent member of Shreveport law circles, Philip H. Mecom, 79, of 535 Wilder Place, apparently suffered a heart attack and died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday while walking to his car in the Convention Hall parking lot.
A one-time law partner with the late Huey P. Long, Mecom also participated in investment activities.
He was born May 13, 1889, in Arcadia and spent his childhood in Caldwell Parish. Educated at Louisiana State University and Tulane law schools, Mecom moved to Shreveport from New Orleans in 1921 when he was appointed assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Louisiana. The following year he moved up to become U.S. attorney, a position he held until he resigned to resume his private law practice in 1935.
Mecom once again set aside his private law practice in 1941 to accept a court appointment as federal district court clerk, a post he held for 10 years. On Dec. 29, 1952, he became the senior partner in the law firm of Mecom, Despot & Scott.
An Army veteran of World War I, Mecom was a member of the local, state and national bar associations and was a leader in national and state Republican organizations.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie Brown Mecom; a son, Philip H. Mecom Jr. of Shreveport; and three grandchildren.
The body will lie in state at Osborn Funeral Home until funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Dr. J. Lawrence Plumley, rector of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Leroy Scott, George J. Despot, Leonard L. Lockard, Dr. J. R. Stamper, Louis J. Mathieu and George S. Franklin.
