SUFFOLK - Harry Lee Cross Jr. died July 20, 2001, in Suffolk. Born in Nansemond County, Va., on Dec. 20, 1915, he was the son of the late Harry Lee Cross Sr. and Jennie Lee Williams Cross.

He was a lifelong resident of Suffolk and attended Suffolk schools and Fishburne Military Academy, majoring in business administration. He was employed by the Virginia Electric and Power Company from 1936 to 1941, when he entered the U.S. Army. Mr. Cross served as a company commander with the 96th Infantry Division in the South Pacific and was discharged as a major in 1946 with a Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge.

In 1956, after a 20-year engineering career with VEPCO, Mr. Cross founded the real estate brokerage, Harry L. Cross Jr. & Sons Real Estate Co., today managed by his sons as Remax Acrosstown and Cross Realty Rental Management. He helped to create the Nansemond-Suffolk Real Estate Association, served as its president, and as a director of the Virginia Real Estate Association.

Mr. Cross served as commander of Post 57 American Legion and as a Boy Scout troop leader for many years. He served on the Suffolk School Board as a member and chairman. He was president of the Suffolk Rotary Club and the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce. He served for eight years on the Suffolk City Council, during which time the city merged with Nansemond County in 1974. He was a member of the board of the First Federal Savings Bank of Virginia.

As a lifelong member of Main Street United Methodist Church, he served as chairman of the church council and in many responsible positions.

Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Jean Ritchie Cross and three children, all of Suffolk: a daughter, Nancy J. Cross and her husband, W. Vincent Pair Jr., and twin sons, Hugh Ritchie Cross and his wife, Lynn Butler Cross, and her son, Vernon Gaskins Eberwine IV, and Harry Lee Cross III and his wife, Lisa Thompson Cross, and grandchildren, Harry Lee Cross IV, Joseph McIlwaine Cross and Alice Ritchie Cross; four sisters, Martha Cross Howe Fawcette of Virginia Beach, Alma Cross Duke and her husband, Ray Eley Duke, of Suffolk, Betty Cross Pretlow of Everets, and Jennie Cross Kalie and her husband, John Edmond Kalie, of Laurel, Md.; and brother-in-law, LaBrie Hamilton Ritchie and his wife, Ruth, of Garden Valley, Roseburg, Ore., and his children, Robert Hugh Ritchie of Los Angeles, Michael Leon Ritchie of Garden Valley, and Ruth Ritchie Ricard of Fresno; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Parks officiating. The family will receive friends at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 North Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434, or to a charity of one's choice.
