Mrs. Martin Bowman, nee Gertrudis Hermes, died at 2 o'clock this morning, at her home, 1410 Milwaukee avenue, where she had resided for thirty years. Mrs. Bowman was one of the very earliest German settlers of the Belle City, coming here when the place was a mere village. She was a kind hearted and generous woman, ever ready to assist the sick, poor and needy, and had a host of warm friends who will sadly regret that she is no more.
Deceased was born March 11, 1829, at Mundschau, Germany, and came to America December 22, 1846, locating in Racine the following year, 1847. She was was married to Martin M. Bowman July 22, 1852, he dying some sixteen years ago.
There survives to mourn her death four sons and two daughters, vis: Frank M., Albert E., John L., and Charlie H. Bowman, Mrs. Lewis Burdick and Mrs. William Benson, also twenty-two grandchildren, all living.
The funeral will take place on Monday, February 19th, at 9:30 o'clock, from the house, 1410 Milwaukee avenue, and 10 o'clock from the St. Joseph church, corner of North Erie and St. Patrick streets.
