G. W. Allen 56, of 207 Mitchell St., Benton, a retired coal miner died at 4:15pm, Wednesday at the Franklin Hospital. He was in failing health the past three years.
A county resident the past 35 years, he formerly was employed at the Freeman 4 mine. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Benton and was a member and a past Master of the Benton Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel; his mother, Mrs. Anna Leffler; two sons, James E. Allen of Aurora and Sam A. Allen in the Navy stationed at Key West, Fla., two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Hennings of Popular Bluff, Mo. and Mrs Sarah Slas of Carbondale, seven grandchildren, and three brothers, Ernest Allen of Chicago Heights, Edward Leffler of St. Louis and Harold Leffler of Benton.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Friday at the First Baptist Church in Benton with Rev. William Bohn officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows cemetery under the direction of the Mitchell Funeral Home, Benton, where the body will lie in state and where Masonic services will be held at 8pm Thursday.
