The son of German-born Henry & York County-born Leah Ann (Schindler) Lesh, in 1860 he was a butcher living in York Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and blue-gray eyes. His surname is spelled "Leach" in the 1860 census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 27, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 11 as a private with Co. K, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was accidentally cut on the right leg by a New Yorker's axe while working on breastworks at Bolivar Heights, West Virginia, on August 24, 1864, but remained on the roster and honorably discharged at term's end October 13, 1864, in York.

He married Leah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Fidler September 5, 1865, and fathered Mary Leah (b. 1866), Ellen Kate (b. 12/04/69), Carrie Estella (b. 01/01/70), William Frederick (b. 02/18/71), Catherine Elizabeth (b. 04/22/72), Annie Barbara (b. 02/28/76 - married a Quigley), and Henry Clinton (b. 12/30/82). In 1890, he lived in Spry, York Township, but died in York Borough from "ilio-colitis with fecal impaction" lasting "several hours" with "myocarditis & arteriosclerosis" contributing factors.

His death certificate claims February 19, 1843, as his birth date.
