Obit taken from The Normangee Star Vol. XXIII No. 36 July 4, 1935 A Beautiful Life Closed The radiant spirit of Miss Lela Gilbert slipped from its earthly moorings into that wider sphere of eternal peace, on last Thursday afternoon at four o'clock, at the home of her parents near town.
Funeral services were conducted at Hopewell Cemetery on Friday morning at ten o'clock. Her pastor, Rev. C. E. Bullock, conducted the last sad rites. He was assisted by Rev. R. N. Davis of Harmony Baptist Church and Rev. W. R. Davis Puducah. All of the Scriptures, readings, talks, and prayer breathed comfort to the heartbroken family.
Songs by the choir included: "Shall We Gather at the River?" "Does Jesus Care?" and "Asleep in Jesus"
Lela gave her heart to her Savior and united with the First Baptist Church at eleven years of age. She was faithful in her Sunday School, B.Y.P.U. and other church work.
Lela was nineteen years of age at the time of her death. She was a member of the 1933 graduating class, and was beloved by all her classmates and teachers. She made an excellent school record.
She had been ill for a year, and under the care of both Houston and Temple physicians, but she gradually grew worse. She bore her sufferings in beautiful patience and silence. "Leaves have their time to fall, and flowers wither at the north winds's breath, And stars to set. But thou, thou hast all, Seasons for thine own, Oh Death!"
Thus Lela was called from the glorious Springtime of Youth, when Life seems most alluring sweet and full of promise.
Many floral tributes expressed the sympathy and love of friends.
Lela leaves to mourn her going, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Gilbert; a sister Lena; two brothers, Ray and Olin, her grandparents and other relatives.
The Star joins friends in offering sympathy.
May the Heavenly Father's Holy Spirit brood tenderly. "Like dew on drooping blossoms, Like a breath from the Holy Place laden with health and healing, Come with thy deep words of Grace."
Hollis-Griffin Undertaking Co. had charge of the arrangements.
