Services for Lena Orr will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 9, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Bryan. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Bryan City Cemetery.
Lena was born and lived in Normangee, Texas until graduating from high school. She then entered Sam Houston State Teachers College where she earned a BBA degree and Elementary Teachers Certificate. She taught school for four years at King's Highway in North Brazos County and two years at Kurten. During World War II when her husband joined the Air Force, she went to work at Texas A & M as an accountant where she remained until retiring after 33 years of service.
Lena was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bryan where she was a member of the Neighborly Sunday School Class and the Prime Timers. She was also a member of the Crestview Volunteers and the Woman's Club. She loved to do hand work such as needle point, crocheting and embroidery. She also loved to work in her yard and always had pretty flowers.
Lena and Carl Orr were married on August 28, 1939. They enjoyed doing things together whether it was traveling, fishing, working in the yard, or just sitting in their easy chairs reading. For many years they owned a second home at Camp Creek Lake in Robertson County. They loved working in their garden and relaxing with nature.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl Orr, one sister; Lela Gilbert and two brothers; Olen Gilbert and Ray Gilbert. She is survived by two nieces; Linda Belote and Jay and Shirley Eplen, one nephew; Brian Gilbert and Kathy. She is also survived by three great nieces, five great nephews, three great great nieces and two great great nephews.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Lena's caregivers who enhanced her quality of life over the last few years. These people who truly became family include: Tina Morgan, Angie Rodriguez, Janie Conde, Sherry Payne, Wendy Ashmore, Maria Garza and Anita Dubose. Also thanks to the nurses at Hospice Brazos Valley for the care they provided over the last few days. All of these people were a true blessing.
