THE DEATH OF BENJAMIN W. COHEE
Stockwell, Oct 9 - Benjamin W. Cohee, 98 year-old Civil war veteran and pioneer blacksmith died at 2 o'clock this morning at the home of his son, Bert Cohee, after a year's illness. He was said to be Tippecanoe county's last Civil war survivor except for Edward Magee of Lafayette, who moved into the county in recent years from the east. Mr. Cohee, former member of Lafayette's Logan-Taylor post of the Grand Army of the Republic which has surrendered its charter because of deaths inroads upon its membership had lived for nearly 64 years in the vicinity of Stockwell but had not taken part in G.A.R. meetings hence the officers of the Lafayette post were not aware that he was still among the living. A native of Frankfort, he was born Feb 17, 1842. In September, 1861, he enlisted in the famous Tenth Indiana regiment of volunteer infantry which made a brilliant record for itself on the battle fields. He was a private in Co. K. After the war he married Rebecca Winship. She died and in 1870 he married Martha Hart who also died. Mr. Cohee was formerly active in the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. Surviving are the son and two daughters, Mrs. Lettie Platt, Stockwell, and Mrs. Mary Cooley, Lebanon,. The body was taken to the Dickerson funeral home. Friends may call at the Bert Cohee home after 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon; funeral Friday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church. Military services will be conducted. Rev. C. V. Roush officiating.
