Born in what now was then Union County, the son of John & Sarah (Frantz) Swengle, in 1860 he was a student living in Franklin Township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, on his way to becoming an ordained minister. In between those two events, he was a school teacher. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of seventeen in Middleburg, Centre County, August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 7 as a private with Co. I, 184th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865. He properly stated his age at enlistment and, therefore, likely had parental permission to join the army.

He married Mary B. Hipple, but her status and any children who may have resulted is unknown. He married Bertha Luella "Lula" Buck in York in 1898 and fathered Uriah Clark (b. 01/27/00) and Ada C. (b. 10/04/02). He became a bishop in the United Evangelical Church and was a publisher of religious books. The cause of his death is listed as "myocarditis" with "cystitis" a contributing factor.
