from the Rutland Daily Herald, May 1, 1917:
Miss Isabelle M. Brown died yesterday of ailments resulting from advanced age at her home, 23 West street. She had been in poor health for some time and had been seriously ill for a number of weeks. Miss Brown was in full possession of all of her faculties and up to her last illness was keenly interested in public events. She was associated with the office of town clerk of Rutland for 60 years and celebrated her 90th birthday last September. Miss Brown was born in the house on North Main street, now occupied by P.R. Eaton, her father purchasing it in 1825. Rutland had been her home all her life. She is survived by her brother, James Brown of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Z.E. Ross of Washington, D.C.
She attended the private school conducted by the Misses Leberet in the old house on the corner of West and Main streets, where the Chatterton store is now located, and at 18 began her public career. She was the oldest living member of the Congregational church, having joined in 1847. Miss Brown was assistant to her father, Gen. A.L. Brown, who held the office of town clerk for 40 years, and did much of the work of the office. For 18 years she was assistant to his successor, and for two more years she held the office of town clerk. This was when Rutland, Center Rutland and Sutherland Falls were combined and there was a large amount of work and writing to be done.
The funeral arrangements had not been made last evening.
