Calvin Woodard was born 1827 in a portion of Wayne County that later became Wilson County, the 2nd of 6 known surviving children (5 boys/1 girl) born to wealthy farmer William Woodard Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth Simms.

He was the paternal grandson of David Woodard and Elizabeth Bullock and gr-grandson of Elisha & Mary Woodard, all of Edgecombe County. He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Christopher Woodard of England (b.ca. 1594) who was an early settler in Virginia. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson Barnes Simms and Martha Dew of Wayne County.

Like his father before him, Calvin was a successful farmer. On November 3, 1847, he married Winifred Exum, daughter of John Exum and Elizabeth Ham of Wayne County. They were both 20 years old.

Calvin and Winifred would become parents of 6 known children:

* Mary Eliza Delpha Woodard Daniel (1849-1898)
* Elizabeth (1857)
* John Exum Woodard (1855-1928)
* Frances "Fannie" Louisa Woodard Hassell(1859-1889)
* Calvin Woodard Jr. (1865/6-1930)
* Warren Woodard (1870/1-1933)

When Civil War broke, 34 year old Calvin enlisted with the NC 61st Regiment as a private. Following the war, he returned to farming in Gardner, Wilson Co, NC.

Calvin Woodard Sr. died in 1887 at age 60. His wife of 40 years survived him 9 years, passing at age 69 in 1896.
