The thirteenth of eighteen children born to Henry Sr and Nancy (Aldridge) Board of Franklin Co VA, John married Ellen E Cox on 23 Dec 1852 in Breckenridge Co KY.

As yet, no children have been found, but John and Ellen had almost ten years together before he left for the war, so there should have been a few.

At the beginning of the Civil War, John and his younger brother Alexander, both joined the 58th VA Infantry. John was placed with Captain DeWitt C Booth's Company D and Alexander was placed with Francis Howard Board's Company I.

The 58th fought the battles of Stonewall Jackson's "Romney Expedition", from 1 Jan 1862 to 24 Jan 1862. This may be where John was wounded; he died in hosptial in Staunton, Augusta VA.
