On Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, the angels that had circled Harris M. "Papa Vic" Vickery Sr. in protection during his long illness finally heard God's instruction to escort him home to heaven.

During his illness he never once complained - his only concerns were for others. He was 84 years old and died at home as he wished.

Mr. Vickery was the husband of Edith M. Burrell Vickery, who bravely stood by his side during his illness. He was born in Toccoa, Ga., Sept. 5, 1918. His parents were the late William and Ida Vickery. For most of his life he lived on Virginia Avenue, and for the last year he lived in Pelzer. He was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church in Greenville.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star and many other medals for his bravery. He was an electrician by trade and worked until he was 81 years old.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind to join him on another day, a son, Harris Vickery Jr. and wife, Lori, of Dacusville; daughters, Sharon Spearman, Jan Allison and husband, Larry, and Cathy Durham and husband, Randy, all of Piedmont; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, H.W. "Dick" Vickery, of Greenville; sisters, Jewel Graydon of Greenville and Essie Grant of Laurens; and a special helper who became part of our family, Carolyn Walker.

Mr. Vickery was predeceased by a granddaughter, Tara Shirley, and a son-in-law, David Spearman. Also by brothers, Ed Vickery and Elvis Vickery, and sisters, Bert Knecht and Mert Gibson.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at Grace Baptist Church, with burial at Grand View Memorial Gardens.

Words cannot express the gratitude to the special people who gave of their time and love: Brantley Hester, Chelsia Allison, Leah Whiting, Becky Welborn, Jim Stewart, Kim Stewart and the person who has the sweetest heart just like Daddy's - Deb Edgar. The family would also like to thank the many doctors and nurses who took such good care of Daddy.

"Daddy, you're in heaven now. No longer will you have to look at us through those precious brown eyes with that smile hiding so much pain. There were many times I knew you were hurting so, but you would smile or even try to laugh at me as Carolyn would say to you, 'Pa, she ain't got a lick of sense, has she?' "

"Daddy, please give Tara a hug for Jan."

Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 11 Virginia Ave., Greenville, SC 29611.
