The son of Michael & Lydia A. Lehr, in 1860 he was a moulder living in York Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first served with Albright's Emergency Militia Company September 12 - 24, 1862, after R. E. Lee's forces entered Maryland and threatened Pennsylvania. He then enlisted in York June 17, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 23 as a private with Co. H, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion, and honorably discharged with his company October 3, 1863, in Chambersburg. He then enlisted in York March 31, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 7 as a private with Co. H, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He married Velma Karri and fathered George H. (b. @1879) and Grace (b. 1882). In 1890, he lived in York Borough.
